Headphones and Race Etiquette
Last December, USA Track & Field amended Rule 144.3, pertaining to the use of headphones and other electronic devices, enabling us to allow the use of headphones by runners in non-championship races.
Though The Murfreesboro Half Marathon has decided to allow headphones for the 2009 race, we continue to be committed to providing a safe and enjoyable race environment for all participants. We want to make you aware of the potential dangers posed by wearing iPods/mp3 players, and that we generally discourage their use on race day. However, should you choose to do so, please follow the following guidelines:
- The iPod/mp3 player will not be turned on until after the start of your race so that you can hear all race instructions given at the start line.
- The iPod/mp3 player must be carried on your person in such a way that it does not jeopardize either your safety or the safety of those around you, (i.e. does not cause a tripping, entanglement or ocular hazard).
- The volume must be kept low so that it does not cause offense to other participants and so that you can hear instructions and directions given by race officials, emergency services personnel, or volunteers. Any participants who do not follow the race rules may be disqualified from the race.
- Please remain aware of your surroundings at all times, pay particular attention to lead and emergency vehicles and show common courtesy to all other participants. Do not stop or change directions suddenly! If you feel the need to tighten your shoe laces, or simply need to stop for a rest, please move across to the side of the road before stopping. If you need to change your running line, (such as crossing to grab a drink at a water station), make sure you look first.
- Any race participant at the rear of the field asked to complete the course along the footpath shall turn their iPod/mp3 player off as the roads will no longer be closed to vehicular traffic. Your personal safety is our highest priority!
In the interest of providing a safe and enjoyable event experience for all participants, all competitors should be mindful of road-race etiquette practices.
Remember, registration is less than 48 hours away! We look forward to seeing your name on the list!
