What to do with your keys?
They may not weigh enough to make a difference in your race time, but keeping up with your car keys while you’re running is the last thing you should have to worry about.
On race day, drop your keys and ID off at our Key Drop Off trailer which will be located in the parking area right in front of the entrance to MTSU’s Dean Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium, then pick them up after the race.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Pick up a clear ziplock bag from the Key Drop off trailer.
2. Insert keys and/or I.D. and the tear-off tab from your bib that says “Key Drop Off” with your bib number.
3. Zip up the bag and drop it off at the trailer. For your protection and ours, you’ll be asked to sign a list with your bib number.
4. Pick up your keys after you finish the race.
*Do NOT leave your wallet or valuables, and if you can separate your car key from all the others you may have, that would be even better.
Murph is “hoppy” to represent the Fun Run
“Murph”, the beloved rabbit who lives in “Murphry’s Burrow”, has signed on as spokesbunny for the Murfreesboro Half Marathon’s Fun Run, newly named “Murph’s Fun Run”. He was the obvious choice, as he is an advocate of helping kids lead a healthy lifestyle while having fun.
Murph is the host of the national award winning children’s educational television program Adventures in Murphry’s Burrow which airs on the cable access channel City 3. Now in its seventh season, the series is a winning collaboration between Murfreesboro City Schools, City 3, and series creator Nancy Phillips. Tune in weekdays at 3:30 p.m. and weekends at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. for the newest episode.
“I am so ‘hoppy’ to be the face of the Murfreesboro Fun Run,” said Murph. “Even with the hectic life of a celebrity, I try to stay healthy and to let children know how important it is to eat right and get plenty of exercise. I guess I am the obvious choice for spokesbunny since I run everywhere I go!”
Special Kids, Inc., will be providing volunteers for Murph’s Fun Run.
“It is going to be so much fun and everyone is welcomed….except for tortoises (due to their unfair advantage and secret ninja skills),” said Murph.
We’re Sold Out!
Today around 1 p.m. The Middle Half officially SOLD OUT!
Of course, we’re always needing volunteers for the event. Online volunteer registration is available now. Go ahead, it’s a lot of fun!
Thanks to everyone who signed up early!
Keeping a training diary?
Are you keeping a training diary? Think about tracking your progress. It will be encouraging to see how far you have come! It can be as simple as tracking your distance and time, to including what you ate before, how you felt during the run, the temperature and how you felt after.
Using your arms when running
Don’t forget about your arms! Using your arms to help you push through, especially on hills, is the best way to maximize your effort.
Pumping your arms and increasing your arm-swing will help your arms and legs work together…getting you farther!
Reduce cramps when running
Getting cramps? That’s not uncommon for even experienced runners. Try changing your breathing and what you eat, and be sure to stretch before and after every run.
Staying hydrated can reduce cramps. Try drinking a glass of sports drink before you run. Then refill the glass and leave it out so it becomes room temperate while you’re running. After you run, drink the entire glass. This will help eliminate post-run cramps.
Bananas and pickles are a good source of potassium, which help to prevent running cramps.
Also, when you run, make sure you are bringing enough oxygen into your system. The best way to do this is to take full breaths. That means completely exhaling to allow for a new, full breath.
Simple injury treatment: R.I.C.E.

Treat simple injuries by following the easy steps in RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.
Beat the heat this summer
Want to beat the heat during your summer training? Soak a bandana in ice water and then tie it around your neck while you run. Or try to run in the early morning when it’s still cool out. Light-colored, loose fitting clothes will also reflect the sun’s rays keeping you cooler.
And remember to drink, drink, drink plenty of water or sports mix. By keeping your water storage high, you’ll also improve your body’s cooling mechanisms.
The right socks for your run
Look into getting a pair of socks made specifically for running…everyday socks could lead to blisters. Running socks that are made of two lightweight, moisture wicking materials will help prevent blistering by absorbing the friction between the layers. Feet stay dry as the inner layer wicks the moisture away from the foot and into the outer layer for evaporation.
If you wear proper socks and still get blisters, you may need a different pair of shoes. You may also need to apply Vaseline or another running lubricant on blister prone areas.
Many runners, however, have no discomfort or blisters with regular cotton socks.
